Polygamy (one man having multiple wives) has expanded greatly in the last decade in countries where governments aggressively suppress freedom and secularism and where religious and regional cultures that legitimize polygamy were able to gain dominance.
The expansion of polygamy in the west is due to the increased dominance of right wing parties with a large fundamentalist religious support base, coupled with misdirected multiculturalism that encourages cultural ghettos.Although polygamy in these countries is illegal, it is met with little opposition. In places such as England, the government has even given tax breaks to men with second wives. In Norway, France, Germany and the Netherlands there are reports indicating an increasing number of men with multiple wives.

Petition for One Secular Public School in Ontario      Signatures

Whereas Canada/Ontario was found in violation of its international human rights obligations by the United nations Human Rights Committee in 1999 and again in 2005 by virtue of discrimination in the funding of Roman Catholic schools in Ontario;

Whereas the termination of public funding for religion-based schools by the governments of Quebec and Newfoundland has negated the constitutional rationale for public funding of Roman Catholic schools;

Whereas the Ontario Legislature has the power to eliminate public funding to the Roman Catholic school system by passing legislation to that effect, as was done by the legislature of Manitoba;

Whereas the religious segregation of Ontario children undermines the role of public schools in fostering tolerance and respect between Ontarians of different backgrounds; and

Whereas the ONDP has always advocated and supported equality and equity for all Ontarians in the delivery of public services;

Therefore Be It Resolved that the ONDP supports one secular publicly funded and accountable school system, and permit where appropriate, religious instruction in any faith in publicly funded schools outside regular instructional hours.

Join the International Campaign against setting up Shari'a court in Canada!


To: All progressive organizations and individuals


On October 21st 2003, Muslim leaders in Canada elected 30 member council to establish a judicial tribunal for Muslims known as " the Islamic Institute of Civic Justice". The move is designed to persuade Canadian court to uphold decisions made under the Muslim Law.

The International Campaign for the Defense of Women's Rights in Iran is running an International Campaign against this new move in Canada.

We strongly believe that this move is anti women's move and will push back women in the society in general. In the past 20 years, women's rights have been increasingly under attack by the Islamic governments and groups. Women are subject to abuse for disobeying social Islamic standards. Daily degradation of women, prohibition from many forms of employment, field of study and sports, sexual segregation in buses, schools and public places, Stoning to death of women or murdering them for sexual relations outside marriage, acid-throwing in the faces of women, and flogging for transgressing Islamic laws for improper behavior have been imposed on women under Islamic influence not only in countries such as Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan but also in Western countries.

The women's rights movement has fought this reactionary movement and many paid a price in doing so. . As part of this radical movement, we believe that all people who live in Canada are citizens with equal rights, and should live according to same social laws and norms. We do not divide society into cultural, religious, national and racial majorities and minorities. We stand for equal and universal laws and freedoms for all humanity, which should embrace all, irrespective of sex, race, ethnicity, etc.
We now are calling on all individuals and progressive organizations to oppose the proposed tribunal for legal recognition of settlements according to Shari'a. This proposal is anti-freedom, anti-women, misogynist and anti-modernism and is strongly racist.

We therefore have the following demands:

1. Religion to be declared private affair of the individual. And complete
separation of religion from education for children under the age 16.

2. Prohibition of violent and inhuman religious ceremonies, practice and any form of religious activities that is incompatible with people's
civil rights and liberties and the principle of the equality of all.

3. Prohibition of teaching religions subjects and dogmas or religions interpretation in schools and educational establishments or in general any law and regulation that breaches the principle of secular non- religious

Joignez-vous à la campagne internationale contre l’implantation de la cour de la charia au Canada.

À : Tout organismes et citoyens progressistes.

Le 21 octobre 2003, les Leaders Musulmans du Canada (Muslim leaders in Canada) ont élu 30 membres sur leur conseil afin d’établir un tribunal juridique pour musulmans, connu sous le nom de « l’institut islamique de la justice civile ». (the Islamic Institute of Civic Justice). Ce changement est créé dans le but de convaincre la cour Canadienne de soutenir les décisions prises sous la loi musulmane.

La campagne internationale pour la défense des droits des femmes en Iran, fait circuler une campagne internationale contre cette nouvelle démarche du Canada.

Nous croyons fermement que cette démarche [l’implantation de la cour de la charia au Canada] vient à l’encontre du mouvement des femmes et fera reculer les femmes dans la société en général. Durant les 20 dernières années, les droits des femmes ont été de plus en plus attaqués par les groupes islamiques et par les gouvernements islamiques. Les femmes ont été l’objet d’abus pour désobéissance sociale d’après les standards islamiques. Une dégradation quotidienne pour les femmes leur interdisant plusieurs formes d’emplois, champs d’études ou choix de sports ; une ségrégation sexuelle dans les autobus, dans les écoles et dans les endroits publics ; la lapidation à mort des femmes ou leur assassinat pour relations sexuelles hors-mariage ; le lancement d’acide à leur visage et leur flagellation pour avoir transgressé la loi islamique pour comportement inapproprié, ont été imposés aux femmes sous l’influence de la loi islamique, pas seulement dans les pays tel que l’Iran, l’Afghanistan et le Pakistan, mais aussi dans les pays de l’Ouest. 

Le mouvement pour le droit des femmes s’élève contre ce mouvement réactionnaire et en plus elles en paient le prix. En tant que membre de ce mouvement radical [pour la sécularisation], nous croyons que toute personne vivant au Canada est un citoyen ayant des droits égaux et devrait vivre en accord avec les mêmes normes et lois sociales. Nous ne divisons pas la société à partir de la majorité ou de la minorité culturelle, religieuse, nationale ou raciale. Nous supportons les lois et libertés égalitaires et universelles pour l’humanité entière, lesquelles devraient inclure tout le monde sans égard au sexe, à la race, à l’ethnie, etc..

Nous faisons présentement appel à tous les individus et aux organismes progressistes de s’opposer au tribunal pour la reconnaissance légale de l’établissement de la charia. Cette dernière est anti-liberté, anti-femmes, misogyne et anti-modernisme, et très raciste.

Nous formulons donc les demandes suivantes :

1. Que la religion soit déclarée une affaire privée pour chacun. La séparation complète de l’enseignement de la religion pour les enfants de moins de 16 ans.
2. L’interdiction de cérémonies religieuses violentes et inhumaines, de pratiques et autres formes d’activités religieuses incompatibles avec les droits et libertés civils des individus et le principe de l’égalité pour tous.
3. Interdiction d’enseigner sujets et dogmes à interprétation religieuse ou d’interpréter les religions, ou toute loi ou règlement violant le principe de sécularisation dans les écoles et établissements d’éducation.
